Acer ‘Pixie’ – A Compact and Stunning Japanese Maple

Acer palmatum ‘Pixie’ is a delightful and compact Japanese maple, perfect for smaller gardens or container planting. Known for its fine, deeply cut leaves that emerge red in spring, maturing to a soft green in summer before turning brilliant shades of yellow and orange in autumn, ‘Pixie’ provides exceptional seasonal colour and year-round interest.

Reaching a height of around 1.5–2 metres and a spread of 1.5–2 metres, Acer ‘Pixie’ is ideal for tight spaces, patios, or as a feature tree in mixed borders. It thrives in a sheltered spot with partial shade or dappled sunlight, as its delicate leaves can scorch in full sun. ‘Pixie’ prefers moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil and should be planted in either early spring or autumn to allow for proper root establishment.

Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring to encourage strong, healthy growth. Mulching around the base will help retain moisture and regulate temperature.

Though its flowers are small and not the main attraction, Acer ‘Pixie’ produces red flowers in spring that provide an early nectar source for bees and other pollinators.
