Acer palmatum ‘Yezo-nishiki’ – A Vibrant Japanese Maple
Acer palmatum ‘Yezo-nishiki’ is a striking deciduous tree renowned for its vibrant, deeply lobed foliage. In spring, the leaves emerge a bright reddish-purple, deepening through summer, and culminating in brilliant scarlet hues in autumn. This upright, spreading Japanese maple can reach a height of 6–7 metres at maturity, with a spread of 2.5–4 metres, making it an excellent focal point in gardens of various sizes.
While primarily cultivated for its stunning foliage, ‘Yezo-nishiki’ produces small red-purple flowers in spring, which, although inconspicuous, add to its seasonal interest. For optimal growth, plant this maple in a sheltered position with full sun or partial shade. It thrives in moist but well-drained soils, accommodating clay, loam, or sand types, with an acidic to neutral pH. Planting is best done in autumn or early spring to allow the tree to establish before the growing season.
To maintain its health and vibrant appearance, apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. An annual mulch of organic matter helps retain soil moisture and regulate temperature, benefiting its shallow, fibrous root system. Minimal pruning is required; however, removing any dead or crossing branches during the dormant season (late autumn to mid-winter) can enhance its natural form.
Although the flowers are not a significant feature, they can provide a modest nectar source for early pollinators, supporting local biodiversity. The primary appeal of Acer palmatum ‘Yezo-nishiki’ lies in its dynamic foliage and graceful form, offering year-round interest and elegance to any garden setting.
