Acer palmatum Dissectum – A Graceful Laceleaf Japanese Maple

Acer palmatum Dissectum, commonly known as the Laceleaf Japanese Maple, is a stunning ornamental tree prized for its finely cut, feathery leaves and graceful weeping habit. In spring, the leaves emerge in a soft green, maturing to a rich burgundy in summer, before transforming into brilliant shades of orange, red, and gold in autumn. This tree offers year-round interest with its elegant form and vibrant seasonal colours.

Reaching a height of around 1.5–2.5 metres and a spread of 2–3 metres, Acer Dissectum is perfect for smaller gardens, containers, or as a focal point in mixed borders. It thrives in a sheltered position with dappled shade or morning sun, as its delicate leaves can scorch in intense afternoon sun. It prefers moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Plant in autumn or early spring to allow for strong root establishment before the growing season.

For optimal growth, feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. Mulching around the base will help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.

Though its flowers are small and not a major feature, Acer Dissectum produces blooms that provide an early nectar source for pollinators such as bees. This makes it a wonderful choice for wildlife-friendly gardens, supporting biodiversity while adding beauty to your space.
