Broccoli Marathon is a popular variety of broccoli that produces large, tight heads of delicious, nutritious florets. The plant has a vigorous growth habit, with deep green leaves and thick stems. The variety is well-suited for growing in the UK and can be grown from seed as a Strip Multi Pack, which contains several small plants.
For best results, plant Broccoli Marathon in a sunny, sheltered position in well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. It is best to sow seeds from late winter to early spring, either directly in the ground or in a seedbed, and transplant the seedlings when they are 5-10cm tall. The plants should be spaced around 60cm apart to allow them room to grow.
Broccoli Marathon has a relatively short cropping period, typically producing a single large head per plant. The crop is usually ready to harvest from mid-summer to early autumn, depending on the timing of planting. The plants may continue to produce smaller side shoots after the main head is harvested, providing a second, smaller crop.
To feed the plants, apply a balanced fertiliser to the soil before planting and again when the plants are around 20cm tall. Keep the soil moist throughout the growing season, and mulch around the base of the plants to help retain moisture and suppress weeds. Pests and diseases that commonly affect broccoli include cabbage root fly, aphids, and clubroot, so monitor the plants carefully and take appropriate action if necessary.
