Garlic Bulb

Garlic is a must-have in any garden, prized for its bold flavor and numerous culinary uses. Easy to grow and full of health benefits, this hardy bulb thrives in the UK climate and provides a robust harvest. Whether you’re an experienced gardener or a beginner, garlic is a reliable and rewarding crop.

When to Plant:
Plant garlic in autumn (October to December) for a summer harvest, ensuring the cloves are planted 2-3cm deep, with the pointed end facing upwards. Garlic prefers well-drained, fertile soil with plenty of sunlight. For an earlier harvest, you can also plant in early spring (March), though autumn planting typically produces a larger, more flavorful crop.

When to Feed:
Garlic doesn’t require heavy feeding, but a light application of balanced fertiliser or well-rotted compost in early spring can promote healthy growth. Avoid over-fertilising, as this can lead to excessive leaf growth at the expense of bulb development.

When to Harvest:
Garlic is usually ready for harvest in mid to late summer (June to July), when the lower leaves begin to yellow and die back. Gently pull the bulbs from the soil, taking care not to damage them.

How to Get the Best Results:
For the best results, ensure the soil is well-drained and weed-free. Regular watering is essential during dry spells, and be sure to lift the garlic before the ground gets too wet to avoid rotting. Rotate crops each year to maintain soil health and avoid disease.
