Lettuce Little Gem is a classic variety that produces small, crisp and sweet leaves that are perfect for salads, sandwiches or as a garnish. This variety is a popular choice for home gardeners due to its ease of growing and compact size, making it ideal for small gardens, pots and containers.
To plant Lettuce Little Gem, choose a well-drained soil in a sunny or partially shaded position. Sow the seeds directly into the soil from March to August, and cover with a thin layer of soil. Keep the soil moist and well-watered throughout the growing season. Thin out the seedlings to a distance of around 15cm (6in) between each plant.
Lettuce Little Gem will typically mature in around 8 to 10 weeks after sowing, and can be harvested when the leaves are around 5cm (2in) tall. The plant grows up to 30cm (12in) in height and spreads up to 15cm (6in) wide.
To feed the plant, apply a balanced fertilizer once a month during the growing season. Keep the soil moist and well-watered, especially during dry periods. If the weather is particularly hot and dry, it may be necessary to water the plants twice a day. Snip off the leaves as needed for fresh salads or garnishes, and enjoy the delicious taste of homegrown lettuce Little Gem.
