Catananche caerulea, commonly known as Cupid’s Dart, is a charming perennial that adds a touch of blue elegance to any garden. This plant features striking, lavender-blue, daisy-like flowers with darker centers that bloom from midsummer to early autumn. Growing to a height of 60-75 cm (24-30 inches), Catananche caerulea forms a slender, upright clump, making it ideal for borders, cottage gardens, or as a cut flower in arrangements.
For optimal growth, plant Catananche caerulea in a sunny position where it can receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. It thrives in well-drained, sandy or loamy soil and is highly drought-tolerant once established, making it a low-maintenance choice for various garden settings. Deadheading spent blooms will encourage continuous flowering and prevent the plant from self-seeding excessively.
Feed Catananche caerulea with a balanced, all-purpose fertiliser in early spring to promote vigorous growth and abundant flowering. Pruning involves removing spent flower stems and any dead or damaged foliage throughout the growing season to maintain a tidy appearance. In late autumn, cut back the foliage to ground level.
