Sturon Onion Sets
Sturon Onion Sets are a popular, reliable variety that produces large, uniform bulbs with a mild, sweet flavour. Known for their excellent storage qualities, these onions are perfect for use in the kitchen and will last well into the winter months. Sturon is a fantastic choice for both beginners and seasoned gardeners, offering high yields with minimal effort.
When to Plant:
Plant Sturon onion sets in early spring, from March to April, once the soil has warmed up and is no longer waterlogged. Choose a sunny, well-drained location and prepare the soil by loosening it and incorporating organic matter. Plant the sets 2-3 cm deep, with the pointed end facing upwards, and space them about 15 cm apart to give the bulbs plenty of room to grow.
When to Feed:
Sturon onions benefit from a balanced fertiliser or well-rotted organic compost. Apply a general-purpose fertiliser at planting time, and a high-potash feed when the bulbs begin to swell in mid-spring to encourage strong, healthy growth and a high yield.
When to Harvest:
Sturon onions are typically ready for harvest in mid to late summer, from July to August, when the foliage starts to yellow and fall over. Lift the bulbs carefully and allow them to dry in a warm, well-ventilated area.
How to Get the Best Results:
For the best results, ensure the soil is consistently moist during dry spells, and keep the area free from weeds. Thin out crowded plants to promote good air circulation and larger bulbs. Proper care will lead to a healthy, bountiful crop.
