Phoenix Canariensis

The Phoenix Canariensis, also known as the Canary Island Date Palm, is a magnificent palm tree that can add a touch of the tropics to any garden or landscape. This hardy palm can withstand harsh weather conditions and has a slow growth rate, making it an excellent choice for a long-lasting feature plant.

The Phoenix Canariensis can reach a height of up to 20 metres, with a spread of around 6-8 metres. This palm is a slow grower and will take many years to reach its full height. It has a robust trunk that can reach a diameter of 60cm and is covered in a fibrous, brown-grey bark.

This palm produces attractive, feathery fronds that can grow up to 6 metres in length. It also produces small, creamy-white flowers in late spring and early summer. These flowers are followed by edible, orange-yellow fruits that resemble small dates.

The Phoenix Canariensis is best planted in a sunny position, in well-draining soil. It can tolerate a range of soil types, from sandy to clay, but prefers soil that is slightly acidic. This palm is also tolerant of salt spray, making it an excellent choice for coastal gardens.

In terms of flowering time, the Phoenix Canariensis typically blooms in late spring to early summer. However, it may take several years for the palm to reach maturity and start producing flowers. With its stunning appearance and hardiness, the Phoenix Canariensis is an excellent choice for any garden or landscape that requires a touch of the tropics.
