Leucothoe ‘Curly Red’ is a compact, evergreen shrub prized for its distinctive, wavy-edged foliage that changes colour through the seasons. Emerging rich green in spring, the leaves transition to deep red and burgundy in autumn and winter, providing year-round interest. This slow-growing shrub reaches a height and spread of 60-90cm, making it ideal for borders, containers, and woodland planting schemes.
Although primarily grown for its foliage, Leucothoe ‘Curly Red’ produces delicate creamy-white, bell-shaped flowers in spring (April to May), which contrast beautifully against its vibrant leaves. It thrives in partially shaded to fully shaded positions, preferring moist, acidic, well-drained soil. Perfect for woodland-style gardens, it also performs well in pots with ericaceous compost. The best time to plant is autumn to early spring, giving the roots time to establish. Apply an acidic plant fertiliser in spring to support healthy growth and maintain its intense foliage colour.
Leucothoe ‘Curly Red’ is good for pollinators, as its nectar-rich spring flowers attract bees and other beneficial insects, providing an early food source. With its striking foliage, seasonal colour changes, and pollinator-friendly blooms, it is a fantastic, low-maintenance addition to any garden.
