Fern dryopteris 2ltr

Dryopteris, commonly known as the Male Fern, is a robust and elegant evergreen fern that adds a lush, woodland feel to any garden. This fern features finely textured, arching fronds with a rich green colour, providing a vibrant contrast to other plants. Typically reaching a height of 60-90 cm (24-36 inches) and spreading to about 60 cm (24 inches), Dryopteris is ideal for shaded borders, woodland gardens, and underplantings.

For optimal growth, plant Dryopteris in a partially shaded to shady position where it can receive dappled sunlight or filtered light. It thrives in well-drained, humus-rich soil that remains consistently moist but not waterlogged. Dryopteris is adaptable to a range of soil types, including clay and sandy soils, as long as drainage is adequate.

Feeding is minimal; an annual application of a balanced, all-purpose fertiliser in early spring helps support healthy growth. Pruning is also minimal; simply remove any dead or damaged fronds in early spring before new growth begins.

Dryopteris ferns are excellent for supporting local wildlife. Their dense foliage provides shelter and habitat for small creatures, including insects. While they do not produce flowers, their presence in the garden supports biodiversity by offering a natural habitat and contributing to the overall ecosystem health.
