Calocephalus (Silver Bush) – 10 cm
Calocephalus, also known as Silver Bush or Leucophyta brownii, is a compact, mound-forming evergreen plant prized for its striking, silvery-grey foliage. With its delicate, wiry stems and a bushy habit, it adds unique texture and contrast to borders, rockeries, and containers. Its small, spherical form makes it an ideal choice for adding structure and a touch of elegance to any garden design. During summer, it may produce small, yellow button-like flowers, adding a subtle hint of color.
Best Position: Plant in a sunny, well-drained spot to bring out the best in its silver foliage. Calocephalus thrives in poor, sandy soils and is drought-tolerant once established. It’s perfect for coastal gardens and can also be used as a striking addition to winter displays due to its frost tolerance.
Height: This compact plant grows to an approximate height of 20-30 cm with a similar spread, making it suitable for small spaces, borders, and mixed containers.
When to Prune: Minimal pruning is required. Lightly trim in early spring to maintain its shape and remove any dead or damaged stems.
When to Feed: Feed sparingly with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring, as Calocephalus prefers poorer soils.
Flowering Time: Expect small yellow flowers in mid to late summer, though the foliage is the main attraction year-round.
