Aucuba japonica ‘Crotonifolia’ – Bold Evergreen with Golden Variegated Foliage
Aucuba japonica ‘Crotonifolia’, also known as the Spotted Laurel, is a hardy evergreen shrub valued for its large, glossy green leaves splashed with vibrant golden-yellow variegation. This striking foliage adds colour and interest all year round, brightening even the shadiest parts of the garden.
In spring (March to May), it produces small purple-red flowers, which are followed by bright red berries in autumn on female plants if a male is nearby for pollination.
Growing to around 1.5–2m tall and wide, ‘Crotonifolia’ is perfect for hedging, screening, or as a bold statement in mixed borders.
Best positioned in partial to full shade, it thrives in moist, well-drained soil and is especially useful in dry, shady spots where many plants struggle. It is also tolerant of pollution, making it ideal for urban gardens.
Care tips: Water regularly in the first year. Once established, it is drought tolerant and very low maintenance.
Feed in early spring with a balanced fertiliser to promote healthy growth and berry production.
Prune lightly in spring or early summer to maintain shape and remove any damaged or overly long shoots.
Aucuba ‘Crotonifolia’ brings year-round colour and structure to even the most difficult garden spaces.
