Alchemilla mollis – Soft Foliage and Frothy Flowers for Cottage Garden Charm

Alchemilla mollis, or Lady’s Mantle, is a charming, low-growing perennial loved for its soft, scalloped green leaves that catch dewdrops and rain like sparkling jewels. In early to mid-summer (June to August), it produces masses of delicate, lime-green to yellow flowers that rise above the foliage in airy sprays, perfect for softening borders or using in floral arrangements.

Ideal for cottage gardens, wildlife planting, and shady edges, this hardy perennial forms dense clumps up to 45cm high and 60cm wide. It’s also excellent for ground cover and underplanting roses or shrubs.

Best positioned in sun or partial shade in moist, well-drained soil. It’s adaptable and thrives in a range of garden conditions, including dry shade once established.

Care tips: Water well in dry spells during its first season. Once established, it’s drought tolerant and very low maintenance. Feed lightly in spring with a general-purpose fertiliser to promote healthy foliage and flowering.

Prune by cutting back spent flower heads after blooming to encourage fresh growth and prevent self-seeding. A harder cut in late summer can rejuvenate tired foliage.

Alchemilla mollis is a timeless garden favourite, offering texture, colour, and effortless charm with minimal care.
