Acer palmatum ‘Seiryu’ – A Graceful, Upright Japanese Maple
Acer palmatum ‘Seiryu’ is a beautiful Japanese maple known for its unique, upright, and graceful form. Unlike many other Japanese maples, ‘Seiryu’ features finely cut, feathery green leaves that provide a delicate texture throughout the year. In autumn, the foliage transforms into vibrant shades of orange, yellow, and red, offering a stunning display of seasonal colour.
Reaching a height of 4–5 metres with a spread of 2–3 metres, ‘Seiryu’ is perfect for larger gardens, woodland settings, or as a standout specimen tree. It thrives in a sheltered position with dappled shade or partial sun, as full afternoon sun may scorch its delicate leaves. It prefers moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Plant in spring or autumn, ensuring the roots have time to establish before the growing season.
To encourage strong growth and vibrant foliage, feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. Mulching around the base helps retain moisture and maintain a stable root environment.
While the flowers of ‘Seiryu’ are small and not the main feature, they offer an early nectar source for pollinators like bees. This makes it a wonderful addition to a wildlife-friendly garden, supporting local pollinators while providing beauty throughout the seasons.
