Acer ‘Ki-Hachijo’ – A Stunning Yellow-Green Japanese Maple
Acer palmatum ‘Ki-Hachijo’ is an exquisite Japanese maple, prized for its striking golden-yellow foliage that emerges in spring. The leaves transition to a soft lime green during summer and turn brilliant shades of yellow and orange in autumn, offering stunning seasonal colour. With its graceful, rounded shape and elegant form, it makes a perfect feature tree in any garden.
This slow-growing tree reaches a height of 3–4 metres and a spread of 2.5–3 metres, making it ideal for small to medium-sized gardens or containers. It thrives in a sheltered position with dappled shade or morning sun, as full afternoon sun may scorch the leaves. Acer ‘Ki-Hachijo’ prefers moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil, and it’s best planted in autumn or early spring to allow strong root establishment.
To encourage healthy growth and vibrant foliage, feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring. Applying mulch around the base helps retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.
Though its flowers are not the main attraction, Acer ‘Ki-Hachijo’ produces small red flowers in spring that provide an early nectar source for pollinators such as bees. This makes it a great choice for wildlife-friendly gardens, supporting biodiversity while adding beauty to any outdoor space.
