Acer palmatum ‘Fire Cracker’ – A Vibrant Japanese Maple
Acer palmatum ‘Fire Cracker’ is a striking, compact Japanese maple, celebrated for its fiery red leaves that appear in spring and intensify to deep burgundy throughout summer. In autumn, its foliage transforms into a vibrant mix of oranges and reds, creating a spectacular seasonal display. This slow-growing tree is perfect for adding year-round colour and elegance to any garden.
Reaching a height of around 2–3 metres and a spread of 2–2.5 metres, ‘Fire Cracker’ is ideal for small gardens, containers, or as a feature tree in borders. It thrives in a sheltered position with dappled shade or partial sun. As with most Japanese maples, it prefers well-drained, moist, slightly acidic soil. For best results, plant in autumn or early spring to allow roots to establish before the growing season.
Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to encourage healthy growth and vibrant foliage. A mulch of organic matter around the base helps retain moisture and regulate temperature.
While ‘Fire Cracker’ is most admired for its stunning foliage, it also produces small, inconspicuous flowers in spring. These flowers provide an early nectar source for pollinators like bees, making it an excellent choice for wildlife-friendly gardens, supporting biodiversity while adding beauty and interest to your outdoor space.
