Acer palmatum ‘Emma’ – A Compact and Colourful Japanese Maple

Acer palmatum ‘Emma’ is a charming and compact Japanese maple that provides vibrant colour and structure to any garden. Its leaves emerge in early spring with hues of red and orange, gradually maturing to a rich green with a hint of purple throughout the summer months. In autumn, the foliage turns to stunning shades of red, orange, and gold, creating a striking seasonal display.

Reaching a height of around 1.5–2 metres with a spread of 1.5–2 metres, ‘Emma’ is perfect for smaller gardens, containers, or as a feature tree in borders. It thrives in a sheltered position with dappled shade or partial sun, as its delicate leaves can scorch in direct sunlight. Acer ‘Emma’ prefers moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. For best results, plant in early spring or autumn, allowing the roots to establish before the growing season.

Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to promote healthy growth and vibrant foliage. A layer of mulch around the base helps retain moisture and regulate temperature.

While the flowers are small and inconspicuous, Acer ‘Emma’ produces blooms that attract bees and other pollinators in the spring. This makes it an excellent choice for wildlife-friendly gardens, supporting pollinators while offering beautiful year-round colour.
