Acer aconitifolium – The Stunning Fern-Leaf Maple
Acer aconitifolium, also known as the Fern-Leaf Maple, is a striking deciduous tree admired for its deeply lobed, fern-like foliage and exceptional autumn colour. In spring, it produces small red flowers, adding delicate beauty before the leaves fully unfurl. By autumn, the green foliage transforms into a spectacular display of crimson, orange, and gold.
This slow-growing tree reaches a height and spread of around 3–5 metres, making it ideal for smaller gardens, woodland settings, or as a feature in mixed borders. It thrives in a sheltered position with dappled shade or full sun, preferring well-drained, moist, and slightly acidic soil. For best results, plant in autumn or early spring to allow the roots to establish.
Acer aconitifolium requires little maintenance but benefits from mulching with well-rotted organic matter in spring to retain moisture and enrich the soil. If necessary, apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring to encourage healthy growth.
This tree is excellent for pollinators, as its spring flowers provide an early nectar source for bees and other beneficial insects. With its elegant foliage, seasonal interest, and wildlife-friendly attributes, Acer aconitifolium is a perfect choice for any garden looking to enhance biodiversity and visual appeal.
