Tree Peony – Burgundy
The Tree Peony (Paeonia suffruticosa) Burgundy is a striking deciduous shrub, admired for its large, velvety, deep burgundy blooms that exude elegance and charm. Flowering from April to June, its dramatic petals contrast beautifully with lush green foliage, creating a stunning focal point in any garden. Growing to a mature height of 1.5–2 metres, this slow-growing shrub develops a sturdy, woody structure that provides year-round interest.
Highly attractive to pollinators, the tree peony’s open, pollen-rich flowers provide an essential early-season nectar source, helping support bees and other beneficial insects when food is scarce.
For best results, plant in fertile, well-drained soil in a sunny or lightly shaded, sheltered position. Avoid areas exposed to strong winds, as the delicate petals can be easily damaged. The best planting time is autumn to early spring, giving the roots time to establish before the growing season.
Feed with a balanced fertiliser in early spring to encourage strong growth and repeat after flowering to support future blooms. Apply a mulch of well-rotted compost or manure in autumn to retain moisture and enrich the soil.
With its luxurious deep-red flowers and pollinator-friendly benefits, the Tree Peony Burgundy is a must-have for a sophisticated and wildlife-friendly garden.
