Euphorbia purpurea

The Euphorbia purpurea is a striking, clump-forming perennial, admired for its rich purple-tinged foliage and distinctive lime-green flower bracts. Flowering from late spring to early summer (May to July), its eye-catching blooms contrast beautifully with the deep-hued leaves, creating a dramatic effect in borders and garden beds. Growing to a height of 60–90cm, this compact yet bold plant adds texture and colour to any planting scheme.

A fantastic choice for pollinator-friendly gardens, its nectar-rich flowers attract bees and other beneficial insects, providing a valuable food source at a key time of year.

For best results, plant in moist but well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. Euphorbia purpurea thrives in fertile, humus-rich soil and does well in both borders and woodland settings. It is easy to maintain and drought-tolerant once established, but avoid waterlogged conditions.

Feed with a general-purpose fertiliser in early spring to encourage strong growth and vibrant foliage. Wear gloves when handling, as Euphorbia’s milky sap can cause skin irritation.

With its dramatic foliage, striking flowers, and pollinator-friendly benefits, Euphorbia purpurea is a stunning and low-maintenance choice for any garden.
