Euphorbia characias
Euphorbia characias is a stunning evergreen perennial, known for its bold, upright form and striking lime-green flowers surrounded by yellow bracts. It begins flowering in late spring to early summer (April to June), providing a unique, long-lasting display that brightens any garden. Growing to a height of 1–1.2 metres, this perennial adds dramatic texture and structure to borders, gravel gardens, or mixed planting schemes.
Euphorbia characias is an excellent choice for pollinator-friendly gardens, as its nectar-rich flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. This early-season source of food helps support local wildlife when few other plants are in bloom.
For best results, plant in well-drained, moderately fertile soil in a sunny position. Euphorbia characias thrives in dry, poor-to-moderately fertile soils and is highly drought-tolerant once established. It is ideal for gravel or Mediterranean-style gardens but will benefit from protection in extremely cold winters.
Plant in autumn or early spring, allowing the roots time to establish. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring to encourage strong growth and vibrant blooms. Euphorbia’s milky sap can irritate the skin, so handle with care and wear gloves when pruning.
With its bold structure, striking blooms, and wildlife benefits, Euphorbia characias is a perfect addition to any low-maintenance garden.
