Polypodium, often known as the Rock Brake or Polypody Fern, is a resilient and attractive evergreen fern that enhances any garden with its lush, evergreen fronds. This fern is recognized for its unique, finely divided foliage that adds a touch of elegance and texture to shaded areas. Typically reaching a height of 30-60 cm (12-24 inches) and spreading about 30 cm (12 inches), Polypodium is perfect for shaded borders, woodland gardens, or as ground cover in cooler, damp areas.

For optimal growth, plant Polypodium in a partially shaded to shady position where it can receive indirect light. It thrives in well-drained, moist soil rich in organic matter. While Polypodium is tolerant of various soil types, it prefers consistently moist conditions and benefits from a layer of mulch to help retain soil moisture.

Feeding is minimal; an annual application of a balanced, all-purpose fertiliser in early spring supports robust growth. Pruning involves removing any dead or damaged fronds in early spring before new growth begins.

Although Polypodium does not produce flowers, its dense foliage provides valuable cover and habitat for small insects and wildlife.
